Teaching Philosophy

Junior Golf Academy

Formal golf instruction may often become tedious and repetitive in nature.  The Brookhaven Junior Golf Academy allows for a more enjoyable learning experience by introducing creative methods while maintaining a structured, yet relaxed environment.  The academy’s goal is to make learning fun and memorable.  Our practices will lead to retention of knowledge, the ability to learn from mistakes, and practice the correct techniques.  This ultimately will improve the student’s golf game.

Hat Testing Perimeters

Testing will be performed during class time. Each month (mostly the last week of class), we will have class extended for a 2-hour class time to get on the course to play for our hat level.  Competition is the best way to test the skills you have obtained in class.  This is a great way for the kids to become a better golfer not just skill oriented but SCOR-IENTED.  The true test of ones ability is to perform under pressure

SNEAD Level Requirements (White through Orange Hats)

  • Current White Hat through Orange Hat will play from 100 yards

Other Requirements:

1. Must shoot the score twice to receive the hat they earned
2. One score must come from our Two Hour Class during the month
3. Another Score can be turned in if they play in a golf tournament from the following leagues:

  • US Kids Tournament
  • NTPGA Tournament
  • Brookhaven Junior Golf Tournament
  • Another tournament approved by our instructors
    • The Kids must play their own ball during this tournament (scramble scores will not count for testing)
    • We will need the actual score card or a picture of the score card.
    • That scorecard will need two signatures on the card: The Marker and The Scorer

4. There will be a rotation of 4 scores - once they have turned in score #5 then the 1st score drops off

  • Why this is important?
    • Student A
      • 5 – 4 – 5 – 4 – 7 = 25 – Green
      • 8 – 6 – 4 – 5 – 4 =27 – Orange (Receives Orange Hat)
      • 8 – 5 – 5 – 7 – 5 = 30 – Orange
      • 6 – 6 – 8 – 6 – 6 = 32 – Orange
    • At this point the Green Score drops off even if they shoot another green score
    • They must do it in a consecutive 20 hole span
    • In the span 20 holes, we could have 4 months go by from start to finish.  At the ages of thses students, alot can happen and change in their understanding and swing mechanics.  We want this to be a valid form of testing and this was the best way we thought this could happen.

5. There are times during the winter or when weather plays a role, which we only get 3 holes in.  When that happens the next time we play, even if we get 5 holes in, the first 2 would go and complete the previous 5 hole score.  This is continual scoring. Anytime we go out to play holes we count those scores.
6. Kids are able to skip one hat level if their scores reflect an ability to do so. (Not Two Levels)
7. NO Kid will be demoted for the score they turn in.  This is ONLY a promotional type testing.
